park building

Laying the Groundwork:

At Windrow, we believe that great terrain parks are built on a solid foundation—and that foundation starts with mastering basic snowcat operations. Before stepping into the creative, technical world of park building, operators must first become confident and capable in fundamental grooming techniques.

Understanding how to efficiently manage snow, read terrain, and operate a cat in a variety of conditions is essential. These skills not only ensure safety and machine control, but they also build the intuition needed for shaping, stacking, and maintaining park features with precision.

Trail grooming provides the perfect training ground. It teaches flow, consistency, and the importance of snow quality—key elements that directly influence the performance and longevity of park features. Operators who start here develop a keen eye for detail and a respect for the process, which ultimately translates to cleaner builds, better rider experiences, and longer-lasting results.

Our consulting process always begins with this principle: strong grooming fundamentals create better park builders. Whether you're training a new crew or looking to elevate your current operations, Windrow is here to guide that progression, one pass at a time.

Designing with Purpose: Building Parks that Ride Right

Building a great park is more than pushing snow into jumps and rails—it’s about creating an experience that feels intuitive, exciting, and safe from top to bottom. At Windrow, we approach park design with intention, crafting layouts that prioritize rider flow, minimize risk, and cater to a wide range of skill levels.

Safety is non-negotiable. Every feature we design and build takes into account proper spacing, visibility, speed control, and fall zones. From entry points to landings, we think through how each element interacts with the terrain and the rider. A safe park isn’t just about avoiding injury—it’s about building trust with your guests and encouraging progression.

Flow matters. Whether it’s a beginner line or an expert jump set, a park should ride smoothly and naturally. We analyze pitch, spacing, and rhythm to ensure that each feature transitions logically into the next. The goal is to eliminate guesswork for the rider and create a seamless top-to-bottom run that builds confidence and stokes creativity.

Progression is key. One size does not fit all. A well-rounded park has something for everyone—from small rollers and ride-on boxes to technical jibs and step-over jumps. We design tiered zones that allow beginners to build skills while still offering challenges for advanced riders. This layered approach keeps traffic flowing, reduces congestion, and makes the park more accessible to a broader audience.

At Windrow, we build with intention—balancing creative vision with operational practicality. The result is a terrain park that doesn’t just look good from the lift, but actually rides well, feels safe, and keeps your guests coming back for more.

Designing Terrain Parks with SketchUp + Google Earth

Our terrain park design process harnesses the powerful synergy of SketchUp and Google Earth to create imaginative, rideable, and topographically accurate layouts. SketchUp allows us to build detailed 3D models of every park feature, from rails and jumps to full course layouts, with a focus on precision, flow, and rider experience.

By integrating these models with Google Earth, we can overlay our designs directly onto real-world terrain. This ensures that every element is placed with consideration to slope, elevation, and natural contours of the land. It also allows us to evaluate how the park fits within its environment—factoring in access points, existing infrastructure, and visual impact—so nothing is left to guesswork.

Arriving on site with a clear, detailed plan streamlines the build process, saving valuable time and resources. Crews can get to work with confidence, knowing exactly where each feature belongs, which leads to increased efficiency, smoother communication, and a faster path from concept to completed park.
